These color patterns are for use with the Desktop Pattern control panel by Calico Publishing. A demo version of Desktop Pattern is available in the Macintosh Utilities software library on America Online. You can order the complete version of Desktop Pattern 1.1 by sending $19.95 + $3.00 shipping and handling to Calico Publishing, 12751 Woodford Way, Bridgeton, MO 63044-1368. In addition to the complete version of Desktop Pattern you will also receive a printed manual, numerous patterns, and a free upgrade to the next version which will include additional features such as pattern optimization, more keyboard shortcuts, expanded import/export capabilities, and limited pattern modification capabilities and other features not yet determined.
If you have ResEdit you can copy any pattern into your System file and renumber it so that it is has an ID of 16 and then reboot your machine. Make sure you save a copy of the original 'ppat' ID=16 so that you can replace it if needed. The General control panel from Apple will refuse to edit color patterns larger than 8x8 and will only let you edit in B&W if a larger pattern is installed as 'ppat' ID=16. Replacing the pattern with the original pattern will allow the General control panel to edit in color again. With the demo version of Desktop Pattern you must turn off all the randomizer boxes and then turn on only the randomizer box for the 'Gray 50%' pattern. Reboot your machine and the randomizer feature of Desktop Pattern will install the gray 8x8 pattern so that you can once again edit color patterns with the General control panel.
